Burr Coffee Grinder

A high quality home burr grinder is an essential component in your Gourmet Toolkit. You can get one of two types of burr grinders: one with flat burrs or one with conical burrs. Both have a stationary burr, with its second burr spinning from the power provided by the motor. By gravity, the beans fall and are ground between the two burrs.

Your typical blade grinder pulverizes the coffee unevenly, making the brewing process less than perfect. With a decent burr grinder, you'll not only be creating a precision grind to enable the water to evenly extract the flavor, but you'll be able to adjust the grind to get the exact coarseness or fineness to accommodate different types of roasts and brewing equipment.

The 40mm commercial-grade conical burrs yield the consistent grind that is critical for a perfect espresso or brewed coffee extraction. It has 40 possible grind settings and claims almost no grind variation from grind to grind. It also has a front-mounted pulse button for grinding directly into an espresso brew basket. $199

Drip Coffee Maker

Now we get into a matter of preference as to the manner of brewing. Perfectly made drip coffee can be excellent when using the right coffee maker. Look for a double-walled stainless steel insulated carafe that will keep the coffee hot for hours. The water temperature should reach around 200 degrees. An even spray is needed to completely and evenly soak the grounds. An airtight or vacuum tight carafe is ideal.

Some of the fancy features found on expensive models just aren't necessary as you don't want your grounds sitting all night waiting for the machine to automatically turn on in the morning. On the other hand, the new Cuisinart drip brewer with built-in burr grinder gets close to being the perfect drip coffee maker. Our recommendations include the following:

Constructed from high-gloss aluminum alloy. Comes with a 10-cup stainless steel insulated thermal carafe, keeps coffee warm for several hours. A touchpad control panel, a digital clock/timer lets you preprogram your desired brewing time, a charcoal water filter removes chlorine and impurities, auto shut-off and pause-to-serve function! $189.99

French Press

Ahhh, the simplicity of the French Press. Many coffee connoisseurs prefer its straightforward ability to extract the most out of the coffee in a natural way. It's a beautiful, manual process and the equipment is relatively inexpensive.

To make the perfect French Press coffee see: The Art of Coffee.

For small amounts, the standard French press coffee maker will work great. These can be purchased just about anywhere; check your local kitchen supply store. For larger quantities, a stainless steel insulated carafe is recommended, as the glass containers dissipate heat much too rapidly. 8-Cup $30.96

Espresso Machine

The caution about espresso is that it truly is an art form which requires culinary skill. It is difficult to master, and takes time and practice to make the perfect espresso. Inferior equipment is sold everywhere and the newer advance automatic machines are quite expensive.

Be prepared to pay between $500 and $1,500 (even up to $3,500+) for a decent espresso maker. For a home machine, there is some great equipment now on the market, but shop around as prices vary quite a bit, so do your research to find the best value.

The good news is that most automatic machines include a high-quality internal grinder specifically designed for an espresso grind. Many automate the entire process from grinding to cleaning, leaving the machine ready for the next shot.

Technology rich, this machine is equipped with an LED display, in case you forgot what you had selected. It's also a beautiful machine with a good brand reputation. First off, it has an 18-bar power pump for fast continuous operation. It's got a built-in conical burr grinder with pre-infusion and a two-cup option. $898

The flexibility of the automatic functions and manual options should be appreciated by the home coffee connoisseur. $1,450

Coffee Cup - The Drinking Vessel

Just a few words about coffee cups: Preferences are truly an individual choice from Christmas gifts to the hand made espresso cups you brought back from Italy. Recommendation: for drip coffee or French press coffee, let your personal preference be your guide.

Espresso on the other hand, if enjoyed straight with a perfect natural coffee créma, is best served using small Demitasse cups made for that purpose. When you use great tasting coffee and good equipment, you'll enjoy a tasty brew and a more authentic experience. If your only experience is the over roasted burnt taste of espressos found in most coffee shops, you're in for a pleasant awakening.

Finally, although travel mugs are essential for the car, the enjoyment of your morning coffee will be compromised because the aroma is trapped inside. If you're taking your coffee to work, we suggest you bring a thermos instead. You'll appreciate your Visionary Coffee to the fullest.

That being said, high quality glass, ceramic or even stainless steel/polished chrome drinking vessels are available in just about every decent kitchen supply store.
